CARE & MAINTENANCE
Thanks to advances in canoe construction, the hull materials we have used need little maintenance beyond periodic cleaning and polishing. Before any hull treatment is applied the hull must be clean of dirt or film. We recommend washing with a mild abrasive cleanser and lots of water. Thoroughly wash off any cleaning residue and let the hull dry before proceeding. We strongly recommend the use of 303 Protectant to protect the color finish of out laminated hulls. 303 Protectant will restore luster by removing oxidation, but more importantly will help prevent fading from exposure to UV light. Application is as simple as spraying it on and wiping it off, then buffing with a turkish towel. We do not recommend waxing a 303 Protected hull as the wax will interfere with the UV protection of 303 Protectant. We recommend once-a-month application during the canoning season and a final application before off-season storage.

The wood trim of your Hemlock Canoe was treated at our shop with three coats of Watco Marine/Exterior Teak Oil Finish which is waterproof and provides a UV sunscreen. It has been applied over any stain color to help seal it into the wood. We recommend that upon receiving your canoe you apply another coat of Watco Oil Finish yourself. Application instructions can be found on the container. We do not recommend the use of varnish on the woodwork of your canoe. You will need to reapply finish to the wood as often as your usage and local conditions require. Do not let the wood dry out, It is best to apply the Preservative until the wood will not accept any more. Before off-season storage we recommend a thorough cleaning of the wood with soap, water and a bristle brush followed by an application or two with Watco Marine/Exterior Teak Oil Finish.
STORAGE
The best canoe storage is upside-down (gunwales down) in a cool, dry, covered location; inside storage is preferred. If outside storage is necessary consider a cover that will provide protection from the elements but which does not rest upon the canoe and provides air circulation. The canoe must be off the ground and we recommend placing it on a rack or sawhorses, securely fastened. Suspending the canoe from above will work, but make sure the canoe's weight is resting on the gunwales. Please do not store heavy objects on top of the canoe or store a canoe on its side, as both will eventually cause the hull to deform.
The best protection for off-season storage is obtained by following the Care & Maintenence suggestions outlined above.
