Canadice Lake is one of the two remaining undeveloped Finger Lakes, Hemlock is the other. Hemlock Lake is the largest
lake in New York State with a completely natural shoreline. As such these two are the paddlesports jewels of the Finger
Lakes region. These lakes have been much in the news lately as their future may be in question.
They form the backbone for the unique City of Rochester water supply system. The elevation of the lakes is 700 feet
higher than the City of Rochester meaning that gravity takes care of water pressure in the system. However a water-sharing
agreement between the City and the County of Monroe Water Authority expres in 2008. The County plans a new large capacity
treatment plant in Webster which may negate the need for the Hemlock Lake facility. At that point approximately 7200
acres of prime lakefront property could become expendable.
